    • There is a model here for making decisions and dealing with doubts. Pray about it, carry it as a question, pester God about it. This is the story of Joseph’s utterly unique vocation, as foster-father of the Son of God.
    • Jean-Paul Sartre tried to describe Joseph at the crib in Bethlehem: “I would not paint Joseph. I would show no more than a shadow at the back of the stable, and two shining eyes. For I do not know what to say about Joseph, and Joseph does not know what to say about himself. He adores, and is happy to adore, and he feels himself slightly out of it. I believe he suffers without admitting it. He suffers because he sees how much this woman whom he loves resembles God; how she is already at the side of God. For God has burst like a bomb into the intimacy of this family. Joseph and Mary are separated forever by this explosion of light. And I imagine that all through his life Joseph will be learning to accept this.”
    • The feast of the birth of Mary is focussed on the birth of Jesus. All of Mary's life was given in care and love for her Son, and his mission. She knew when to be around and when to let him go for the sake of the kingdom of God. She let him go with love to his death and then took her new place and relationship with him after the resurrection.
    • The prayer of Saint Ignatius may fit into prayer today: >Take, O Lord, and receive my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and >my whole will. All that I am and all that I possess you have given me. I >surrender it all to you to be disposed of according to your will. Give me >only your love and your grace; with these I will be rich enough, and will >desire nothing more. >
